Balakata arises from the combination of design with the recovery of ancient techniques. It is a return to handmade things, quality products that last a lifetime. Enjoy the pure materials, their textures and imperfections of handwork, which enhance the beauty of each piece.
Each culture is a source of inspiration and the hands of artisans and artists from around the world, shape our designs, always based on respect for the environment and the people involved in every part of the process.
Balakata is a project born out slowly and progresses slowly, avoiding the rapid mass production and industry. Therefore, all our collections are limited edition, giving it a unique value to each of our products.
All our products fall under at least one of these categories:
Made in Spain
The ikkat or ikat is one of the most complex dyeing techniques worldwide. The threads are dyed before weaving; bonds are applied on the threads that resist penetration of the dye and an impermeable substance such as wax, to thereby obtain a variety of shades on the same thread.
The change in position of the bonds and dyeing with more than one colour produce multicoloured patterns. The designs produced by this technique appear to be unfocused and often resemble the skins of certain reptiles. After dyeing the thread, the final fabric is made on handlooms.
This technique was already practiced in South America before the arrival of the Spanish. The Asian textiles with dyed ikat appeared in Mexico in the sixteenth century as a result of the extensive trade between Asia and Europe through Mexico.
Woven by a million hands, in cotton, silk or wool, imperfect, elegant and durable, that is the Khadi.
The raw material is spun on spinning wheels, called "chakras" and then hand woven on wooden looms.
It is a versatile fabric, cool in summer and warm in winter.
The khadi is the material that triggered the movement for the Indian independence. In the words of Gandhi: "a symbol of self-Ââsufficiency and a commitment to a sustainable world."
